born in 1920 on this day
changing the jazz world
in his mid twenties
with Diz and Max
and Gerry and Chet
showing all us fans
just how good it could get
survivors of the ascap wars
which literally killed
the big bands
but opened the door
for bebop
and cool
before it in turn
was sideswiped
by rock and roll
meanwhile the lifestyle
was taking its toll
and bird was gone too soon
relegated to graffiti in an alley
adjacent to the Birdland of legend
but it is as it gives
cause
BIRD LIVES!
